Constantinos Chaidalis is a graphic/motion designer and illustrator from thens, Geeece.

He works as an Art director for advertising agency and also as a freelance Graphic/Motion designer.

His personal projects are mostly collage illustrations and their animated versions.

Constantinos Chaidalis es un gráfico / diseñador de animación e ilustrador de Atenas, Grecia. Trabaja como director de Arte en una agencia de publicidad y también como freelance Diseñador gráfico y animación. Sus proyectos personales son en su mayoría ilustraciones collage y sus versiones animadas.

How would you describe your work? could you say its a kind of digital collages?

I mostly make digital collages and their animated versions, but from time to time i also sketch and make actual old school collages too.

my professional works are mostly motion graphics, graphic design and videos.

¿Cómo describirías tu trabajo? ¿podrías decir que es una especie de collages digitales?
Hago sobre todo collages digitales y sus versiones animadas, pero de vez en cuando dibujo y hago collages reales de la vieja escuela también.
Mis trabajos profesionales son en su mayoría de motion graphics, diseño gráfico y videos.

Who do you think that are the most influential artists at the moment and what do you like of them??

i think this is a very frustrating period in art, great stuff is happening all around the world and the internet is bringing it all together.

i prefer older art movements such as fluxus and dada and i really love seeing their influence in contemporary art.i am really not sure if an artist is the same thing as it used to be though.i see works of art and i immediately see and understand references and motifs and try to understand if there is some «brilliance» to it, importance or significance.I then try tο distance my self from the first «impression» and see if the art «stays» with me.that is really rare!

¿Quiénes crees que son los artistas más influyentes en este momento y que te gusta de ellos ?
Creo que este es un período muy frustrante en el arte, grandes cosas está sucediendo en todo el mundo y el Internet está trayendo todo junto.
Prefiero los movimientos artísticos más antiguos, como fluxus y dada, realmente me gusta ver su influencia en el arte contemporáneo. No estoy realmente seguro de si un artista es lo mismo que lo que solía ser, aunque cuando veo las obras de inmediato entiendo las referencias y motivos y trato de entender si hay algún brillantez en ella, importancia o significancia. luego trato de distanciarme de la primera «impresión» y ver si el arte queda conmigo. Eso es muy raro !

Do you think that nowadays it is possible to survive working in art?I mean, doing what you like as a living?

I really don’t know to be sincere but as a true pessimist i will have to say no.I am always afraid that i will have to make things to be liked-to be sold-to be bought.i don’t think that’s my train and i also enjoy my day job for the most part, it also keeps me from losing my self as an artist.

¿Crees que hoy en día es posible sobrevivir trabajando en el arte? Quiero decir, hacer lo que te gusta como sustento?
Realmente no se, para ser sincero, pero como un verdadero pesimista voy a tener que decir No. Siempre tengo miedo de que voy a tener que hacer las cosas para vender. No creo que eso sea mi tren y también me gusta mi trabajo diario en su mayor parte, me impide perderme a mi mismo como artista.

Greece has been going through a rough economical situation. How do you think it has impacted on you and other artists?

This so called crisis actually brought everything in a «let’s start over» state after it brought us all on our knees.It ruined many possibilities but also gave many emerging artists and creatives many new opportunities.I also think there is a feel of freshness and restlessness but it really is too soon to speak like we are back on our feet.On a more artistic view this situation could have helped individuals to come together and do more collective projects but i don’t really see that happening yet.

Grecia ha estado pasando por una situación económica difícil. ¿Cómo crees que ha influido en usted y otros artistas?
Esta llamada crisis realmente trajo todo en un estado «Vamos a empezar de nuevo» después de que nos hizo caer en nuestras rodillas. Ha arruinado muchas posibilidades, pero también dio muchos artistas emergentes y creativos muchos nuevas oportunidades. También creo que hay una sensación de frescura e inquietud, pero en realidad es muy pronto para hablar como si estuviéramos de vuelta en nuestro pies. En una visión más artística esta situación podría haber ayudado a las personas a unirse y hacer más proyectos colectivos, pero yo realmente no creo que eso suceda todavía.

Why is it called «brittle» your webpage? what is the concept?

My main concept when i was naming my «brand» was to find a word or title that could describe all of my projects or the way i do things, or maybe how i feel about it.I had this feeling that my works are always kind of ready to fall apart but i couldn’t put it in words so i found myself asking people for words that describe it and fragile and cute came up a lot.i wouldn’t call my website «cute» or «fragile» so i went with brittle!

Por qué se llama «frágil» su página web? ¿cuál es el concepto?
Mi concepto principal cuando yo estaba nombrando mi «marca» era encontrar una palabra o título que podría describir todos mis proyectos o la forma en que hago las cosas, o tal vez lo que siento por esto. He tenido la sensación de que mis obras siempre están a punto de caer a pedazos, pero no pude ponerlo en palabras así que me encontré preguntando a la gente para las palabras que la describen. «Frágil» y «lindo» surgieron un montón. No llamaría mi sitio web «lindo» o «frágil», así que fue «brittle»!

What is art for you?

i think art for me is having raving images in my head.sharing them is not a mandatory process, an obsession.

Why do you use images of american icons, such as james dean and may i say grace kelly ? Its kind of creepy how they look with their eyes gone or with their head cut in two..

I started working on american movie stars just to use their classic beauty/symmetry and play with their «perfection».Removing their eyes and distorting them is just a part of a process in which they actually stop representing themselves and become part of a new equation.I really like how they lose their status, from masculine or graceful for example they transform to eery or disturbing, or how they begin to tell other stories and become part of a new sentimental landscape.

Empecé a trabajar en estrellas de cine americano sólo para usar su clásica belleza / simetría y jugar con su «perfección» .Remover sus ojos y distorsionar los es sólo una parte de un proceso en el que en realidad dejan de representarse a sí mismos y se convierten en parte de una nueva ecuación .Me gusta mucho la forma en que pierden su estatus, de masculino o gracioso, por ejemplo, se transforman en espeluznante o perturbador, o la forma en que comienzan a contar otras historias y pasan a formar parte de un nuevo paisaje sentimental.
