COLOURFUL ARCHITECTURE!

Philippe Corthout is a graphic and web designer that was born on May 7th in Belgium, but at the moment he is based in the city of Antwerp, the city where he lives and work. In his spare time he likes taking photos, sometimes as a freelancer but mostly for himself.
Philippe is also into music, he plays guitar in a band called Newmoon. It’s a shoegaze, dreampop band.
He also told us he’s a game fanatic, also loves vegetarian food, going to concerts, Scandinavian design, etc…

Philippe Corthout es un diseñador gráfico y web que nació el 7 de mayo en Bélgica, pero actualmente vive en la ciudad de Antwerp, ciudad donde vive y el trabaja. En su tiempo libre le gusta tomar fotos, a veces en forma independiente, pero sobre todo por sí mismo.
A Philippe es también le gusta la música, toca la guitarra en una banda llamada Newmoon.
También nos contó que él es un fanático de los juegos, le encanta la comida vegetariana, ir a conciertos, diseño escandinavo, etc …

Being a graphic and webdesigner, how do you think your vision is towards photography? How did you started taking photos?
I started taking picture at a pretty young age. Running around with my parents camera. Later on I studied arts where I learned to shoot and develop film. A couple of years later I moved on to digital photography because it gave me a lot more flexibility. And of course, a serious time saver.
I have a strong focus towards «simple» shots. I worry more about the composition than the object I’m shooting. As a graphic designer, I hold on to the same vision and principles. Good design is as little design as possible. A quote by Dieter Rams that sums it all up. Concentrate on the essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.

Ser diseñador gráfico y web, ¿cómo crees que es tu visión hacia la fotografía? ¿Cómo comenzaste a tomar fotos?
Comencé a tomar fotos a temprana edad. Corriendo por ahí con la cámara de padres. Más tarde estudié artes donde aprendí a disparar y desarrollar la película. Un par de años más tarde me pasé a la fotografía digital porque me dio mucha más flexibilidad. Y, por supuesto, un ahorro de tiempo importante.
Tengo un fuerte enfoque hacia disparos «simples». Me preocupa más la composición que el objeto que estoy fotografiando. Como diseñador gráfico, me aferro a la misma visión y principios. Un buen diseño es tan poco diseño como sea posible. Una cita de Dieter Rams que lo resume todo. Concéntrese en lo esencial. Volver a la pureza, de vuelta a la simplicidad.

Several of your pictures are fronts of houses or corners. What interests you about architecture or those places?
I used to study architecture for a couple of years. The interest in buildings, public spaces,… was always there. But I’m not shooting houses per se, I rather look at the lines, the colours, volumes and shades. I love the way objects can have a relationship with their surroundings. Sometimes the most meaningless scenes are the ones who are the most interesting to shoot.

Varias de tus imágenes son los frentes de las casas o esquinas. ¿Qué te interesa de la arquitectura o esos lugares?
Yo estudiaba arquitectura hace un par de años. El interés en los edificios, espacios públicos, … siempre estaba ahí. Pero yo no estoy fotografiando casas per se, prefiero mirar las líneas, los colores, volúmenes y sombras. Me encanta la forma en que los objetos pueden tener una relación con su entorno. A veces las escenas más sin sentido son los que son los más interesantes para disparar.

Colours and bright colours seem to pop up your photos, and that is a really interesting thing about your work. What is it that you like about colour?
Not sure. I just love striking pictures. Bright colours and a high contrast always appealed to me. My most recent photos are less colourful and more dark though. I think it’s a good thing not to focus myself too much on the same thing and try to do different things. I also like to shoot in black and white. Not sure what it is, but it makes you look more, or at least better, to the things that matter.

Los colores y los colores brillantes realmente le dan bastante vida a tus fotos, y eso es una cosa muy interesante acerca de tu trabajo. ¿Qué es lo que te gusta de color?
No estoy seguro. Me encantan imágenes sorprendentes. Los colores brillantes y de alto contraste siempre me atrajer0n. Mis fotos más recientes son menos coloridas y más oscuras sin embargo. Creo que es una buena cosa para no centrarme demasiado en lo mismo y tratar de hacer cosas diferentes. También me gusta rodar en blanco y negro. No estoy seguro de lo que es, pero que te hace ver más, o al menos mejor, a las cosas que importan.

Which things do you like shooting?
I don’t prefer anything really. I do have a predilection for walls and architecture. But it could be anything that attracts me.

¿Qué cosas te gusta fotografiar?
No prefiero nada realmente. Tengo una predilección por las paredes y la arquitectura. Pero podría ser cualquier cosa que me atrae.

Which was your first camera and with which one are you shooting at the moment? What’s your favourite camera that you’ve been able to take photos with?
My first camera was a Canon AV-1. It was my parents camera at the time but when my interest in photography grew stronger, they got a different camera ‘cause I kinda used it all the time. I shot film for a pretty long time. Currently I still use a Minolta SRT100 for film. But I don’t shoot film that often these days.
At the moment I’m using the Sony A7. It’s really compact but the image quality is incredible. I’m also able to use my old Minolta lenses with it, which is a lot of fun. Without a doubt, my favourite camera. Although I hope to have a medium format camera one day.

¿Cuál fue tu primera cámara y con cuál estás disparando en este momento? ¿Cuál es tu cámara favorita con la que has sido capaz de tomar fotos con?
Mi primera cámara fue una AV-1 Canon. Era mi cámara padres en el momento, pero cuando mi interés por la fotografía se hizo más fuerte, que tiene una cámara diferente porque yo usé un poco todo el tiempo. Disparé película por un tiempo bastante largo. Actualmente sigo usando un Minolta SRT100 para el cine. Pero disparo película a menudo estos días.
Por el momento estoy usando una Sony A7. Es muy compacta, pero la calidad de imagen es increíble. También soy capaz de usar mis lentes Minolta viejos, que es muy divertido. Sin duda, mi cámara favorita. Aunque espero tener una cámara de formato medio un día.

What are you working on at the moment, and which are your future projects?
The coolest thing in 2015 will be the marriage of one of my best friends without a doubt. They asked me to shoot their wedding photographs. Never shot a wedding before. Incidentally, this will be a great experience.
I also hope to get to Iceland or Norway in the summer to take some pictures. That’s it for now. There’s more to come for sure.

En qué estás trabajando en este momento, y cuáles son sus próximos proyectos?
Lo más copado de 2015 será el matrimonio de uno de mis mejores amigos sin lugar a dudas. Me pidieron que tome sus fotografías de la boda. Nunca fotografíe en una boda antes. Por cierto, esta será una gran experiencia.
También espero llegar a Islandia o Noruega en el verano para tomar algunas fotos. Eso es todo por ahora. Hay más por venir seguro.
