INTERVIEW WITH GORDON RAPHAEL BEFORE HIS UK SEMINARS!

Gordon Raphael was born in Seattle, USA. He is not only a great producer, but also a musician and artist.

He has worked with The Strokes, The Libertines, Regina Spektor, Ian Brown and has played in over 50 bands so far.

Just back from a 6 month tour of Argentina, Seattle, New York, Bristol, Paris and Berlin, Gordon will be talking about his history and adventures in the musical world in seminars that will take place this January in the UK.

Ha trabajado con The Strokes, The Libertines, Regina Spektor, Ian Brown y ha tocado en más de 50 bandas hasta ahora.

Luego de regresar de una gira de 6 meses por Argentina, Seattle, Nueva York, Bristol, París y Berlín, Gordon hablará acerca de su historia y aventuras en el mundo musical en los seminarios que tendrán lugar este mes de enero en el Reino Unido.

Well, we know you are a really active person, you travel a lot and produce artists in different countries. Which bands or musicians are you working with right now and which countries have you visited recently and why?
I am having a wonderful calm beginning of 2015, actually staying home
in Berlin and making big plans for half the year already! Since I left Argentina in October 2014, I have been to England 3 times (I’m about to go again on January 23rd!) where I recorded with 2 bands: Candy Darling and Hysterical Injury. Also TobyL from Transgressive Records and I hosted a one-time version of our Basement Club night in London – right before Christmas. I also visited Paris for 10 days and met two great young bands: Jack’s On Fire and Mystified, as well as great museums and art galleries there. I had a fantastic time, and also had some good moments with Jerome, the lead singer of Deportivo, Paris’s most amazing rock band, who I worked with a few years ago. So basically I have only been home for 4 weeks, and Im getting ready to go away very soon.

Bueno, sabemos que eres una persona muy activa, viajas mucho y producis artistas en diferentes países. ¿Con qué bandas o músicos estás trabajando con este momento y cuáles son los países han visitado recientemente y por qué?
Estoy teniendo un maravilloso y tranquilo comienzo del 2015, en realidad quedándome en casa en Berlín y haciendo grandes planes para la mitad del año ya! Desde que salí de Argentina en octubre de 2014, he estado en Inglaterra 3 veces (estoy a punto de ir de nuevo el 23 de enero!) Donde grabé con 2 bandas: Candy Darling and Hysterical Injury. También TobyL de Transgressive Récords y yo organizamos una versión única de nuestra Basement club night en Londres – justo antes de Navidad. También visité París durante 10 días y conocí dos grandes bandas de jóvenes: Jack’s On Fire y Mystified, así como los mejores museos y galerías de arte allí. Tuve un tiempo fantástico, y también tenía algunos buenos momentos con Jerome, el cantante de Deportivo, la banda de rock más increíble de París, con quien trabajé hace unos años. Así que, básicamente, sólo he estado en casa durante 4 semanas, y estoy a punto de desaparecer muy pronto.

Recently you have worked in studio with your Argentinian band and you just recorded an album. When will we be able to listen to these new songs and are you planning a tour with them? And also, how was this experience like? We noticed you have a special chemestry with these musicians when comes to live performances.

Buenos Aires has blessed me with 9 fabulous musicians, and 2 amazing sound engineers, and so I was happy to play 9 concerts there this year and feel the thrill of real rock life in front of a great audience of music lovers!
I recorded my own songs in August at El Pie, Panda, Ion, Electric Chesterland and Salas De Flor. We mixed at Sale La Luna in Buenos Aires, Toybox Studios in Bristol, Analog Poodle Studios in Berlin as well as 2 other Bristol Studios: Invada and J&J Studio- both owned by members of Portishead! So, the songs sound insane and incredible and all my Argentinian musicians (Federico Esteves, Gerardo Farez, Charlie Desidney, Fede Cabral, Juaquin Carambula, Maria Florencia, Camila Iorio and Ana Laura Chacon Medina) were magic on every note!

Right now I have two brand new records that are finished, and am spending my time looking for labels and promoters to help me make sure they will be heard around the world. As soon as this is lined up, I will release them, and hopefully tour for two or three hundred shows!

Recientemente has trabajado en el estudio con su banda argentina y acaban de grabar un álbum. ¿Cuándo vamos a poder escuchar estas canciones nuevas y ¿Estás planeando un viaje con ellos? Y también, cómo fue esta experiencia? Nos dimos cuenta de que tienes una Quimica especial con estos músicos cuando se trata de actuaciones en directo.

Buenos Aires me ha bendecido con 9 músicos fabulosos, y 2 ingenieros de sonido increíbles, y así que estaba feliz de tocar 9 conciertos allí este año y sentir la emoción de la vida real de rock en frente de una gran audiencia de amantes de la música! Grabé mis propias canciones en agosto en El Pie, Panda, Ion, Electric Chesterland y Salas De Flor. Mezclamos en Sale La Luna en Buenos Aires, Toybox Studios en Bristol, Analog caniche Studios de Berlín, así como 2 otros Bristol Studios: Invada y J & J Studio- ambos propiedad de miembros de Portishead! Así, las canciones suenan locas e increíbles y todos mis músicos argentinos (Federico Esteves, Gerardo Farez, Charlie Desidney, Fede Cabral, Joaquín Carámbula, María Florencia, Camila Iorio y Ana Laura Chacón Medina) fueron magia en cada nota! Ahora mismo tengo dos albumes terminados, y estoy gastando mi tiempo en busca de sellos y promotores para ayudarme a asegurarme de que serán escuchados en todo el mundo. Tan pronto como esto se alinee, voy a lanzarlos, y es de esperar una gira de doscientos o trescientos shows!

You worked with The Libertines just before they published their first album. what do you think about their reunion, ando would you like to produce or work with them in their new album ?

I don’t think I’m the right person to record them, but I really loved The Libertines when they first became an electric rock band in 2002. I thought they had incredible potential, and was very sad when the story turned so weird with jails and drugs and problems. I never heard them sound like they did when I first met them and went on their first UK tour (as their live sound engineer). I am excited that maybe now they will be able to let out the power of their music without drama and interferance from drugs and alcohol. May the higher power be with them in 2015!

Trabajaste con The Libertines justo antes de la publicación de su primer álbum. ¿qué pensas acerca de su reunión, y te gustaría producir o trabajar con ellos en su nuevo álbum?

No creo que soy la persona adecuada para grabarlos, pero realmente me encantó The Libertines cuando por primera vez se convirtió en una banda de rock eléctrico en 2002. Pensé que tenían un potencial increíble, y estaba muy triste cuando la historia se volvió tan rara con cárceles y drogas y problemas. Nunca los oí sonar como lo hicieron cuando yo los conocí y fui en su primera gira por Reino Unido (como su ingeniero de sonido en vivo). Estoy muy emocionado de que tal vez ahora van a poder dejar salir el poder de su música sin drama y sin interferencia de las drogas y el alcohol. Que el poder superior esté con ellos en el 2015!

On 29th & 30th January and 5th & 8th February you will be presenting «An Evening with Gordon Raphael!» in the UK, where you will be sharing your experiences as a producer and musician; this events promise to be both personal and highly interactive. How are you preparing for this? Can you tell us a little more about what events will be like and why should we definetely attend to it.

It’s no surprise that this all started in Buenos Aires as well!! ha ha!
I have done talks in music schools first in Argentina, and also in Mexico already 12 times. So my friend Nicholas Ellis in Leeds UK suggested I try to do it in nightclub venues as a special event- and he helped me book 4 cities, Manchester, Wakefield, London and Leeds. Im preparing for it by making sure my hair looks cool, and I find some funny clothes to wear, to keep my image memorable! After all, I will tell stories about my music life in Seattle, New York, Argentina, Berlin and London- so it’s really all natural and I really enjoy doing this. I have a very simple trick which so far works every time, which is to prepare nothing, and then walk onstage, smile and tell the crowd that i want to know what they are interested in, so I can be of most interest and help to them! So pretty soon people start asking me things about bands, fame, songwriting, working with musicians, traveling, world cultures of music, microphones and «the future of art!».

El 29 y 30 de enero y el 5 y 08 de febrero presentarás «Una noche con Gordon Raphael» en el Reino Unido, donde vas a compartir tu experiencia como productor y músico; Este evento promete ser tanto personal como altamente interactivo. Cómo te estás preparando para esto? ¿Puedes contarnos un poco más sobre cómo serán los eventos y por qué deberíamos definitivamente asistir a los mismos.

No es de extrañar que todo esto comenzó en Buenos Aires también !! ja, ja!
He hecho charlas en escuelas de música por primera vez en Argentina, y también en México ya 12 veces. Así que mi amigo Nicolás Ellis de Leeds, Reino Unido, sugirió que tratara de hacerlo en night clubs como eventos especiales y él me ayudó a reservar 4 ciudades, Manchester, Wakefield, Londres y Leeds. Estoy preparandome para ello, haciendo que mi cabello se ve bien, y buscando algo de ropa divertidos para usar, para mantener mi imagen memorable! Después de todo, voy a contar historias sobre mi vida musical en Seattle, Nueva York, Argentina, Berlín y Londres- por lo que es realmente todo lo natural y realmente disfruto haciendo esto. Tengo un truco muy simple que hasta ahora funciona todo el tiempo, que consiste en no preparar nada, y luego a pie en el escenario, sonreír y decir a la gente que yo quiero saber lo que les interesa, así que puedo ser de más interés y ayuda para ellos! Así que muy pronto la gente comienza a preguntarme cosas acerca de las bandas, la fama, la composición, el trabajo con los músicos, los viajes, las culturas del mundo la música, micrófonos y «el futuro del arte!».

Would you like, if you had the chance, to produce bands in the States again?

I am not in love with the US government, and you know I never was even when I was a teenager living at home with my family. However, I love Seattle and Los Angeles and New York and would like to meet some new cool bands there this year! So If anyone wants to record, or play shows with my band- find me on Facebook and say hello!

¿Te gustaría, si tuvieras la oportunidad, producir bandas en los Estados Unidos de nuevo?

No estoy enamorado del gobierno de Estados Unidos, y tú sabes que nunca lo estuve, incluso cuando era un adolescente que vivía en casa con mi familia. Sin embargo, me encanta Seattle y Los Angeles y Nueva York y me gustaría conocer a algunas nuevas bandas frescas allí este año!
