Gordon Raphael nace en la ciudad de Seattle para los que no conocen es de donde es otra leyenda de la música como Kurt Cobain de Nirvana. Actualmente vive en Berlin, pero constantemente está girando por el mundo. Ésta es la cuarta vez que visita la Argentina,a comienzos de éste año estuvo en la ciudad de Rosario trabajando con los chicos de Destrozada Formalidad y el 20 de junio pasado se presentaron en el Festival Ciudad Emergente.
Estamos hablando nada más y nada menos que con el productor de excelentes discos como “Is This It” y “Room of Fire” de The Strokes y “Soviet Kitsch” de Regina Spektor, además de haber colaborado en el álbum debut de The Libertines.

Gordon Raphael was born in Seattle for those who do not know is where is another music legend like Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. He currently lives in Berlin, but is constantly touring the world. This is the fourth time visiting Argentina, at the begining of the year he was in the city of Rosario working with the guys from Destrozada Formamidad where the played live @ Festival Ciudad Emergente last June 20th.

We are talking about nothing more and nothing less than the producer of excellent albums like «Is This It» and «Room of Fire» by The Strokes and «Soviet Kitsch» by Regina Spektor, besides having collaborated on the debut album by The Libertines.

¿Recordas cómo fue tu primer contacto con la música? ¿Cual fue el primer disco o canción que escuchaste?
Mi primer contacto con la música fue viendo un piano en la casa de mi abuela, y mi padre tocaba jazz con su saxofón y clarinete en nuestra casa cuando yo era un niño pequeño. También me acuerdo de él cantando «Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley» (una canción popular de EE.UU. del viejo oeste sobre un vaquero en problemas) y tocando con su guitarra acústica.

Cuando mis padres se fueron a México para pasar unas vacaciones, cuando yo tenía 10 años, la chica que vino a hacerse cargo de mis hermanas y yo, tocaba KJR y KOL, en la radio de Seattle, y de repente nuestra casa estaba llena de rock psicodélico , y buena música que me hizo sentir exaltado y muy muy feliz!

Mi padre también trajo a casa Frank Zappa (Mothers of Invention- We’re Only In It For The Money) y Beatles (Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band) y luego me quedé muy impresionado y enganchado! No podía dejar de pensar en la música … música y rock todo el día, todos los días! Luego me compré The Doors y Jimi Hendrix, y la Mahavishnu Orchestra (Inner Mounting Flame album). Ahora yo sabía que nunca miraría hacia atrás, y que la música me estaba llamando y me perseguía – era mi sueño haciéndose realidad en la vida real.

Do you remember how was your first contact with music? What was the first album or song you heard?

My first contact with music was seeing a piano at my grandma’s house, and my father played jazz with his Saxophones and Clarinet in our house when I was a little boy. I also remember him singing «Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley» (an old-west USA Folk song about a cowboy in trouble) and playing on his acoustic guitar.

When my parents went away to Mexico for a holiday, when i was 10 years old, the girl that came to take care of my sisters and I, played KJR and KOL radio station, from Seattle, and suddenly our home was filled with psychedelic rock, and cool music that made me feel high and floating and very very happy!

My father also brought home Frank Zappa (Mothers of Invention- We’re Only In It For The Money) and Beatles (Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band) and then I was really impressed and hooked! I could not stop thinking about music… rock music all day every day! Next I bought The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, and Mahavishnu Orchestra (Inner Mounting Flame album). Now I knew I would never look back, and that music was calling me and haunting me– it was my dreams coming true in real life.

Actualmente que es lo que más estás escuchando? Cual es esa canción o artista que núnca falta en tu reproductor de música? Por qué?

Sigo escuchando esta música que he mencionado «lo que más (estoy escuchando)», con Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Kate Bush, Skinny Puppy, Iggy Pop y David Bowie, Velvet Underground, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Devo, YES, Gentle Giant, PFM y The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway por Peter Gabriel y Genesis.

También me encanta Jeff Buckley, Roy Harper, Cocteau Twins, The Cure (primeros diez álbumes por favor!), Alice Cooper (Love It To Death album), y Sparks (Kimono My House album) Menos mal … Yo soy un gran fan! seguro.

Right now what are you listening the most? What’s that song or artist that is never missing on your music player? Why?

I still listen to this music I mentioned «the most!», with Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Kate Bush, Skinny Puppy, Iggy Pop and David Bowie, Velvet Underground, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Devo, YES, Gentle Giant, PFM and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Peter Gabriel and Genesis.

Vivís en Berlin pero naciste en Seattle y sos un incansable viajero y has conocido muchos lugares. ¿Cual es la ciudad que elegirías para quedarte aunque sea por un tiempo? ¿Que cosas extrañas de tu natal Seattle?

Decido quedarme en Buenos Aires por un tiempo! ¿Por qué? porque lo paso muy bien acá … siempre! Y conozco gente muy inteigente y copada, y también como excelente comida vegana acá, aunque no lo crean! Argentina es mi lugar especial … No sé cómo ni por qué … pero es la verdad. También me encanta Seattle, 3 veces al año durante un mes es genial, Manhattan – bueno, dame 2 semanas allí todos los primeros días de octubre, y gracias! Berlín … un lugar divertido para escribir música y andar en bicicleta y beber un café excelente! Me gusta cocinar mucho cuando estoy allí. Nadie me conoce allí, y nunca grabo con bandas de allí, y después de 8 años tengo alrededor de 5 amigos en Berlín!

Cuando estoy lejos de Seattle demasiado tiempo, echo de menos el Nico Latte (café!) en el café Vivace, echo de menos el aire fresco, la gente brillante y creativa allí y los árboles increíbles, ríos lagos y montañas de ahí. Todos estos son parte del secreto dentro de mis «poderes mágicos» ja, ja.

You’re now based in Berlin but you were born in Seattle. You’re a tireless traveller and have known many places. What is the city that you choose to stay even for a while? Which things do you miss about Seattle?

I choose to stay in Buenos Aires for a while! Why?? becuase I have such a great time here…always! And meet very cool intelligent people, and also eat great vegan food here, believe it or not! Argentina is my special place… I don’t know how or why… but it’s true. I also love Seattle, 3 times a year for a month is great, Manhattan– well, give me 2 weeks there every early October, thank you! Berlin… a fun place to write music and ride bicycles and drink great coffee! I like to cook a lot when I am there. No one knows me there, and I never record bands there, and after 8 years I have about 5 friends in Berlin!

When I am away from Seattle too long, I miss the Nico Latte (coffee!) at Vivace cafe, I miss the fresh air, the bright and creative people there and the incredible trees, rivers lakes and mountains there. All of those are part of the secret inside of my «magic powers!» ha ha.

Conoces muchas bandas de distintos lados, por lo cual no creo que nos puedas recomendar solamente una… entonces ¿Qué tres bandas no debemos dejar de escuchar? y que ahora vas para Brasil ¿Qué banda de ese país?

Tres bandas debes escuchar— mmm, por Dios va a haber un montón de bandas enojados, y podría perder amigos acerca de esto, pero acá van: 1) Gordon Raphael la canción que se llama All Timeless Dreams!!!! 2)
The Tempers (de Seattle) and Satellites de Mallorca, España… un disco que grabé con ellos lo llamaron Our Very Bright Darkness! en Brasil voy a grabar Audac, y creo que ponen música muy, muy buena, por favor NO dejes de escucharlos!!!!

You know many bands from different countries, so we think you wont be able to recommend us only one… What three bands we have to listen to? now you’re going to Brazil Which band from that country we also have to listen to?

Three bands you must hear— mmm, oh gosh theres gonna be alot of angry bands, and I could lose friends about this but here goes: 1) Gordon Raphael the song called All Timeless Dreams!!!! 2) The Tempers (from Seattle) and Satellites from Mallorca, Spain… an album I recorded with them called Our Very Bright Darkness! in Brazil I’m gonna record Audac, and I think they play very very cool music, please DO check them out too!!!!

Has tenido la posibilidad de trabajar con bandas (que por cierto nos encantan y hemos podido ir a ver en vivo. Ademas el próximo 24 de junio estaremos asistiendo al show de Carl Barât & Gary Powell) como The Strokes, The Libertines, Regina Spector entre muchas otras ¿Qué te llamó la atención o gustó más para que los eligieras para trabajar?

En toda la música busco algo así como un «¡oh por Dios! Eso es genial y me gusta muchisimo» la reacción de mi cuerpo, la mente, las emociones y el alma tan pronto como escucho la música. Es como comer buena comida … vos sabes de inmediato cuando algo es delicioso! Si la comida es aburrida, o asquerosa en el momento de su degustación, no la quiero en mi boca! Eso es como la música, si no es increíble y fabulosa, yo no la quiero en mis oídos!

Sé que en realidad no hay ninguna «buena música» o «mala música», pero para mí, la música es personal y está tan cerca de mi corazón, que tengo mi propia reacción que es que me dice: me encanta o me odias, o estoy aburrido de ella. Los elementos que yo amo en la música son: músicos mortales que tocan ideas salvajes y locas! Incluso si no son de la escuela, o super profesional, no me importa, siempre y cuando ellos hayan inventado una manera emocionante para tocar, que pueda sentir tan emocionante!!

Quiero y necesito un buen cantante … eso significa alguien que este poseído por el espíritu de sus palabras, y las emociones, los pensamientos y obras de arte! No quiero volver a escuchar «el tipico discurso» en las canciones, al igual que todos los clichés de conversación de todos los días! Me gusta la poesía salvaje loco, y las historias de una vida que nunca antes escuché hablar!

En la batería, tengo que tener un ritmo eso es energía, como un terremoto … y una tormenta, y el mar …! No quiero escuchar a un ritmo normal, o un golpe que he escuchado un millón de veces! Quiero un baterista eso es también un loco (o mujer) y se volverá loco y parece que están en llamas cuando tocan! Un gran y única batería de gran alcance es como un regalo de Dios, creo! Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell y John Bonham me enseñaron eso!! Billy Cobham y Narada Michael Walden también son grandes ejemplos de bateristas que amo.

You have had the opportunity to work with bands (which by the way we love and we had the opportunity to see live. By the way on 24th June we will be attending Carl Barât & Gary Powell’s gig) as The Strokes, The Libertines, Regina Spector between many other.
What called your attention the most or you liked best, so you ended up working with?

In all music I look for something like an «oh my god!!! thats so cool and I love it so much» reaction from my body, mind, emotions and soul as soon as I hear the music. It’s like eating great food… you know right away when it’s delicious! If its boring food, or dull food, or yucky tasting food, i don’t want it in my mouth!!! That’s like music, if its not amazing and fabulous, I don’t want it in my ears!

I know that there is not really any «good music» or «bad music» but for me, music is personal and so close to my heart, that I have my own reaction that tells me that I LOVE it or HATE it, or am BORED by it. The elements I love in music are: killer musicians who play wild and insane ideas! Even if they aren’t from a school, or super professional, I don’t care, as long as they have invented a thrilling way to play, that i can feel as exciting!!!!

I love and need a great singer… that means someone posessed by the spirit of his words, and emotions and thoughts and art! I never want to hear «normal speech» in songs, like cliches from every day talking! I like crazy wild poetry, and stories from a life I never heard about before!

For drums, I need to have a rhythm power thats like an earthquake… and a storm, and the ocean…! I dont want to hear a normal beat, or a beat I’ve heard a million times! I want a drummer thats also a madman (or woman) and will go crazy and looks like they are on fire when they play! A great and unique powerful drummer is like a gift from God, I think!!! Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell and John Bonham taught me that!!!! Billy Cobham and Michael Narada Walden are also great examples of drummers I love.

Desde principios de mayo estás en la Argentina, pero ya es la cuarta vez que nos visitas… ¿Qué es lo primero que se le pasa por la mente a Gordon Raphael al pisar nuestro país?

Cuando llego a Argentina, pienso… Hmmm encontraré una novia esta vez? jajaja, es verdad! Y después pienso «Wow, voy a dar lecturas en
Universidades aquí, producir workshops, salir en los diarios, y en televisión y voy a tener un montón de entrevistas y grabar muchas canciones de bandas increíbles. Wow!!!!!

Tuve cuatro viajes muy fuertes y hermosos en Argentina hasta ahora, y cada vez que me quedo más tiempo, y conozco más y más gente en Buenos Aires y Rosario pienso, «wow Palermo es tan cool y sofisticado, voy a divertirme tanto caminando y sintiendo la vibra!»

In early May you came to Argentina, but it is the fourth time you came to visit us … What is the first thing that goes through Gordon Raphael’s mind when landing on our country?

When I land in Argentina, I think… Hmmm, I wonder if I will find a girlfriend from here this time! ha ha… it’s true! And then I think, «wow I’m gonna lecture at universities here, do producer workshops, go in the newspaper, and on TV and get tons of interviews and record many many amazing songs by cool bands! Yay!!!!!»

I have had 4 very powerful and beautiful trips to Argentina so far, and every time I stay a little longer, and meet more and more people in Buenos Aires (and this time Rosario too!!)

I then think «Palermo is so cool and sophisticated, I am gonna have so much fun walking around there and feeling the vibe»!!

Paris Paris GR 2

Estuviste tocando con tu banda Paris Paris Musique (Cordobeses) en la ciudad de Rosario. ¿Contanos cómo viviste esa experiencia, y que te encantó de ella?

El show que hicimos en Rosario fue uno de los mejores del tour… un montón de gente, un gran sonido y sonidista.

Hasta me cocinaron una cena vegana, lo que fue muy agradable de su parte!!! El show en Buenos Aires fue el peor (y hubo algunos malos en México también) Niceto Club fue muy grosero con mi banda y con todas las bandas esa noche. Para nada cool!!

También tengo que contarte un poco de otra cosa. Grabé a la banda Paris Paris Musique en Córdoba el año pasado, y nos hicimos muy buenos amigos, cuando me sugirieron que podrían llevarme con ellos en un tour a México, Perú y Argentina, estaba tan emocionado ya que nunca había hecho un tour con mis propias canciones, y siempre lo quise hacer desde que tenía 19!. Entonces Paris Paris Musique organizó toto el tour, con shows e incluso muchos trabajos para mí para producir bandas. No tengo idea cómo hicieron esta magia, pero estoy tan agradecirdo y les agradezco muchísimo.

Incluso hicieron un gran trabajo tocando mis canciones y cantando en harmonía conmigo (lo que no es fácil!)

You have just been playing with your band Paris Paris Musique (from Córdoba) at the city of Rosario. Tell us how you went through that experience, and what you loved about it?

The show we played in Rosario was one of the best on the tour…. lots of people at the show, a great sound system and good soundman. they even cooked me a vegan dinner, which was very kind of them!!! The show in Buenos Aires was the worst- (and there were some bad ones in Mexico too!) Nicetto Club was very harsh and mean to my band and all the bands that night! Not cool at all!!!

I have to also tell you a little background story. I recorded Paris Paris Musique in Cordoba last year, and we became good friends. When they suggested to me that they might be able to bring me on tour in Mexico, Peru and Argentina- I was so excited to hear this. I have never toured my own songs before, and always wanted to do this since I was 19! So Paris Paris organized the whole tour, with shows and also many jobs for me producing bands all along the way. I have no idea how they did this magic, but I am so grateful to them, and thank them very much. Also they did a great job playing my songs, and singing harmonies with me… whcih i know is NOT easy!

El próximo 20 de junio Destrozada Formaidad estará presentando el EP que grabaron contigo en el Festival Ciudad Emergente ¿Qué expectativas tenes dado que es un festival que presenta nuevos talentos artísticos?

En Julio, la banda Destrozada Formalidad, con quienes acabo de grabar, va a tocar en el Festival Emergente ! Estoy muy emocionado al respecto.

Esos chicos son realmente simpáticos y la pasamos muy bien en el estudio El Pie.- Me encantó su canción Detectivo, y vueron muy amables como para dejarme tocar el sintetizador! Yo creo que lo van a hacer muy bien, y van a ganar muchos nuevos fans!! Eso espero.

También van a tocar mis amigos de Paris Paris Musique en ese festival. Hola mundo! Aquí llega la nueva generación de rock and roll! Gracias!!

On June 20th at Festival Ciudad Emgertente the band Destrozada Formaidad will be presenting the EP that you recorded with. What expectations do you have, because it’s a festival that presents new artistic talents?

In July, at Festival Ciudad Emgertente the band Destrozada Formaidad whom I just recorded this month will perform! I am very excited about that. Those guys are really nice and we had a great time together at El Pie studio. I really love their song Detectivo, and they were kind enough to let me play some unusual synthesizer parts on it! I expect them to do very well, and win many new fans!!!! I sure hope so. Also my dear friends Paris Paris Musique will play at this festival too! So, hello world, here comes the new, next generation of rock and roll! Gracias!
