MYRTO TZIMA!

«My name is Myrto Tzima and I’m a 25 year old Athens based visual artist. I studied Art and Design in Athens and now I’m mainly working in a freelance basis. I’m mostly involved with photography, graphic design and cinema. Most of my personal photo projects are shooted on film. I’m also about to begin my second year at a school of physical theatre which is a combination of acting, contemporary dance, contact improvisation and acrobatics . My favourite book is “Froth on the daydream” by Boris Vian. I spent a lot of my time watching movies , and taking long walks around the city . I really love my cat , the sea, my friends, and a good damn cup of coffee.»

«Mi nombre es Myrto Tzima y soy una artista plástica de 25 años basada en Atenas. Estudié Arte y Diseño en Atenas y ahora estoy trabajando principalmente independientemente.

Estoy mayormente involucrada con la fotografía, el diseño gráfico y el cine. Casi todos mis proyectos fotográficos personales son hechos con película. También estoy a punto de comenzar mi segundo año en una escuela de teatro físico, que es una combinación de actuación, la danza contemporánea, improvisación y acrobacia. Mi libro favorito es «espuma en el sueño «de Boris Vian. Paso gran parte de mi tiempo viendo películas, y dando largos paseos por la ciudad. me encanta mi gato, el mar, mis amigos, y una buena maldita taza de café.»

What does photography mean to you?
I was introduced to the Art of Photography from a very young age because of my father. My father was a mountaineer and an professional photographer. Often I would follow him along his journeys and he would make sure I would always carry my own camera. Photography has been in my life since I can remember myself and my guide was my father. The years passed and I kept on practicing . I had no idea whatsoever if I would go follow a professional career in Photography or if I would even study it academically. I would just keep on taking photographs. I got interested in Cinema and I still am but I ended up studying Art and Design. After my studies it dawned me that photography is a vital part of my existence and of my practice (as a graphic designer). Most of my projects at college were image based (on personal and other archives). The concept of Memory is at the core of what I do and I try to explore it through various means. I have embarked on a journey to understand what is Memory, what it means to Remember. I examine my everyday life and other peoples lives trough picture. I take pictures constantly. That is what I do.

¿Qué significa para ti la fotografía?
Llegué al arte de la fotografía desde muy joven a través de mi padre. El era alpinista y fotógrafo profesional. A menudo yo le siga a lo largo de sus viajes y siempre llevaba mi propia cámara. La fotografía ha estado en mi vida desde que tengo recuerdo a mí mismo y mi guía era mi padre. Pasaron los años y seguí practicando. No tenía idea alguna si yo iría seguir una carrera profesional en fotografía, o si me atrevería a estudiarlo académicamente. Sólo quería seguir tomando fotografías. Me interesé en Cine y todavía lo estoy; pero terminé estudiando Arte y Diseño. Después de mis estudios, me di cuenta de que la fotografía es una parte vital de mi existencia y de mi práctica (como diseñador gráfico). La mayoría de mis proyectos en la universidad eran basados en imágenes (en archivos personales y otros). El concepto de memoria está en el núcleo de lo que hago y trato de explorar a través de diversos medios. He embarcado en un viaje para comprender lo que es la memoria, lo que significa recordar.

Examino mi vida cotidiana y la vida de otros a través de la imágen. Tomo fotos constantemente. Eso es lo que hago.

If you could describe your photos in 3 words, which would they be?
Blue memories (of) red.

Si pudieses describir tus fotos en 3 palabras, cuáles serían?
Recuerdos azules (de) rojo.

How would you describe your work?
Photography is a vital part of my everyday life. Thus, my work is very personal. I experience what I photograph. Through my camera’s lenses I explore reality and the world around me. I see what others don’t see or at least I try. Sometimes, I even distort reality through my lenses. I grasp a fleeting moment of time and materialise it (in a picture) into something else. A fairytale, an otherworldly story, a melancholic situation.

¿Cómo describirías tu trabajo?
La fotografía es una parte vital de mi vida cotidiana. Por lo tanto, mi trabajo es muy personal. Yo experimento lo que fotografío. A través de los lentes de mi cámara exploro la realidad y el mundo que me rodea. Veo lo que otros no ven, o al menos lo intento. A veces, incluso distorsiono la realidad a través de mis lentes. Agarro un momento fugaz del tiempo y la materializo (en la imagen) en algo más. Un cuento de hadas, una historia de otro mundo, una situación melancólica.

Apart from photography, have you worked on something else?
I studied Graphic Design and I work as one. My graphic design work is mostly image based. I would invite you to browse through my tumblr page to have a better insight in what I do. Whilst studying for my BA in Design, I would do workshops and I would attend lectures on my other passion, the Cinema. I even tried to work with moving image myself as an amateur. I got lucky and given the chance to work professionally on cinema productions in both short films as well as full features. Working for a real film was a big deal for me. I dare to consider continuing my studies on a Master’s level in Cinema. Currently, I’m in production of a film of my own (at the time of writing these lines, I just finished my script after a long struggle). Simultaneously, I take classes in physical theatre.

¿Además de la fotografía, has trabajado en otra cosa?
Estudié Diseño Gráfico y trabajo como uno. Mi trabajo de diseño gráfico se basa sobre todo la imagen. Me gustaría invitarte a navegar a través de mi página de tumblr para tener una mejor idea de lo que hago. Mientras estudiaba para mi licenciatura en Diseño, hacía talleres y asistía a conferencias sobre mi otra pasión, el cine. Incluso traté de trabajar con imágenes en movimiento como un aficionado. Tuve suerte y me dieron la oportunidad de trabajar profesionalmente en producciones de cine, tanto en cortometrajes, así como las características completas. Trabajar para una película real fue un gran problema para mí. Me atrevo a considerar continuar mis estudios en el nivel de Maestría en Cine. Actualmente, estoy en la producción de una película mía (en el momento de escribir estas líneas, acabo de terminar mi guión después de una larga lucha). Al mismo tiempo, tomo clases de teatro físico.

What are your inspirations and how have they influenced you?
In terms of photographers, I’m a big fan of Nan Godlin. I have been influenced by various things and trying to put it in words is a very difficult task. Among them are the films I watch, the music clips, the commercials, everything. The books I have read, the visual stimuli, the paintings I love. If I could mention only some of the artists that I’m really fond of, I would include …. Nan Goldin , Sally Man ,Harmony Korine , Pippiloti Rist , Linder Dterling , Karel Martens , Jaromi Jires , Vera Chytilova ,Maya Deren , Todd Solondz ,Wassily Kadinsky , Margarita Karapanou and many others.

¿Cuáles son tus fuentes de inspiración y cómo te han influido?
En cuanto a los fotógrafos, soy una gran fan de Nan Godlin. He sido influenciado por diversas cosas y tratando de ponerlo en palabras es una tarea muy difícil. Entre ellos se encuentran las películas que miro, los clips de música, los comerciales, todo. Los libros que he leído, los estímulos visuales, las pinturas que amo. Si pudiera citar sólo algunos de los artistas que soy muy aficionado, me gustaría incluir …. Nan Goldin, Sally Man,

Are you working on something at the moment?
Currently I’m working on a script I have written. I keep on working on my many personal photography projects. I’m really keen to the idea of going back to Serbia this year, where I spent some time last year and work on my project called “Belgrade is like nowhere” based on the contradictions I discovered in the city of Belgrade.

¿Estás trabajando en algo en este momento?
Actualmente estoy trabajando en un guión que he escrito. Sigo trabajando en mis muchos proyectos fotográficos personales. Estoy muy interesada en la idea de volver a Serbia este año, donde pasé algún tiempo el año pasado y trabajar en mi proyecto llamado «Belgrado es como la nada», basado en las contradicciones que descubrí en la ciudad de Belgrado.
